Boleyn Ground - West Ham United FC
Saturday 21st April 2007
V Everton, Premier League, 3pm
By Chris Walsh

1. Why you were looking forward to going to the ground (or not as the case may be):

Yes very much so , this was my first away game in the Capital and my first visit to Upton park. Having seen the ground many times  on TV I thought it looked a good ground and the fact we were at the business end of the season and we were challenging for a UEFA Cup Place added further excitement to the trip.

2. How easy was your journey/finding the ground/car parking:

We left Liverpool at 8.30 by coach and arrived in London around 1.15pm enough time to find a decent boozer, the coaches parked on Barking Road a road full of ale houses (great!), the journey time was just as I expected but there was a lot of traffic on the A406 and Barking Road leading to the stadium which delayed us a bit but that's the capital for you.

3. What you did before the game pub/chippy.... home fans friendly?

We got off the coach and a headed up to a pub on the Barking Road called the Central which we were told a lot of away supporters where in there. The place was packed with Evertonians as well as West Ham fans, I found the atmosphere between the two sets of supporters was exceptionally good and the West Ham fans very friendly as we chatted football, I even got in a round with a Couple of home supporters.

4. What you thought on seeing the ground, first impressions of away end then other sides of the ground?

I seen the Ground from the distance on the North Circular road heading into London and it looked quite large and impressive, and that proved to be the case when we entered the ground, apart from the smallish East Stand the rest of the stadium looks smart and compact. The views of the pitch from the away end where excellent from where I was sitting in the third row from the goal no obstructed views or anything, the only down side I would say is the facilities in the away end, they are very tight and there is not a lot of room when queuing up for refreshments which could lead to squeeze.

5. Comment on the game itself, atmosphere, stewards, pies, toilets etc..

The game itself was not a great spectacle but I suppose Hammers fans didn't care as they grafted out a deserved 1-0 win which proved to be the start of their great escape from drop. With us still in very much in the hunt for Europe it wasn't all doom and gloom so I didn't let it spoil the day to much although taking something from the game would of been nice. I thought the atmosphere at Upton Park was very good certainly one of the better grounds for atmosphere in the premier league.

6. Comment on getting away from the ground after the game:

Getting out of the Area around Upton Park took a while as their was a lot of traffic on Barking road leading up to the North Circular Road, so if you have travelled by coach or car be prepared for a wait.

7. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out

Overall I enjoyed the day despite the result, I thought Upton Park was an Excellent ground that has character and a good atmosphere, I would recommend the trip to any away supporter and I will be certainly going back there again.
