Although I was
close to completing 'the 92' and I was eager to resume my visits as soon as
the season started, I still kept an eye out for Southport's away fixtures.
Their opening Conference match was away to Dagenham & Redbridge so
I made the decision to take in that game rather than visit another League
ground. |

The match got underway and the Sandgrounders fought back after going behind to an
early own-goal to claim a creditable 1-1 draw. The home fans were quite
entertaining and even included a band amongst their numbers. It was
quite disappointing that so few fans made the trip down from Merseyside but the
atmosphere was still good. At the final whistle Brett came over and
arranged to meet me in the players' lounge and we enjoyed a swift drink in
there before the coach left for the long trip home. The warmth offered by the home
fans inside the lounge was very much appreciated; fans chatted to players and
club officials alike and their welcome was noted.
The 30 minutes I spent in the players' and supporters' club bars brought home
just how much an achievement it was the Dagenham & Redbridge took
Premiership Charlton to a replay in the FA Cup the previous season. Although considered
a force amongst the Conference contenders, they are still a small,
family-orientated club in the best traditions of the 'East End'. Their
Victoria Road ground will never win any prizes; the new Main Stand in particular
is lacking in any soul or character and is perhaps amongst my least favourite of
the new stands that sprung up around the country.
Are you
an away or general football fan who has visited Dagenham recently?
